5 Things You Didn’t Know About Escape Rooms

Escape rooms only arrived on the scene a few years ago, but they are already proving to be a huge hit. There are now thousands of escape rooms across the UK and the world. From escape rooms in Portsmouth to Glasgow.

People of all ages love the fun and excitement of getting involved in a unique story and trying to solve puzzles to complete the challenge.

But despite their popularity, escape rooms are still fairly new. Here are five things that you might not know about them.

1. Escape Rooms Are Based on Japanese Video Games

The first escape room games were actually video games. These were called Escape Games or Escape Rooms, and they originated in Japan. Players would interact with characters in the video games to solve mysteries and crack puzzles. If successful, they would progress to the next level.

The first game of this kind was called ‘Crimson Room’. It was released in 2004, and it was created by Toshimitsu Takagi. This kind of game was later called ‘Takagim’ in reference to the original creator.

It was only in 2007 that the first physical escape room was created. ‘Real Escape Game’ was launched in Japan by the company SCRAP. The aim was to create a more immersive experience.

It was a big hit, and more escape rooms quickly followed. They spread across Asia and then to the rest of the world, and there are now escape rooms in many countries.

2. There Is an Escape Room World Championships

Escape rooms are now so popular that there is even an Escape Room World Championships. The first one was held in April 2019 at the Red Bull Gaming Sphere in London.

During the two-day event, teams from 23 different countries took part. They had to progress through a qualifier round to enter. A special escape room was created called Omni’s Escape, which was created by Dr Scott Nicholson.

The Slovakian team won the event, taking just over 27 minutes to escape in the final round. The Croatian team came in second place.

3. There Are Now Thousands of Escape Rooms

You probably already know that escape rooms are incredibly popular. If you have played in one yourself, you will already know why – the combination of fun, immersion, storytelling and games is a winner.

But did you know how many escape rooms there are now? Let’s look at a few stats:

  • In 2018, there were 1,139 escape rooms in the UK alone across 415 separate venues [source]
  • In 2019, there were nearly 1,500 escape rooms in the UK [source]
  • In the USA, the number of escape rooms has rocketed from 22 in 2014 right up to over 2,300 [source]

As you can see, this is a boom that is still continuing. How many escape rooms will there be in a few more years?

4. There Are Many Themed Escape Rooms

As escape rooms become more popular, new experiences are cropping up. Did you know that there are now escape rooms based on ‘Doctor Who’, for example? And this is just the start.

There are fantasy escape rooms, pirate-themed rooms, even escape rooms set in outer space. Whatever experience you are looking for, there’s a good chance you can find it.

5. You Can Go Head to Head in Escape Rooms

You probably know that in escape rooms you team up with at least one other person, then you solve the puzzles together. But did you know that you can also go head to head with another team?

This is becoming increasingly popular for stag nights, hen nights, large family gatherings and team-building events. Because there are only so many people you can fit inside an escape room, large groups split into teams and take on each other.

Some escape room companies will provide a selection of escape rooms, sometimes with similar rooms that two teams can try to escape from at the same time. The team that escapes first is the winner.

Alternatively, one team can go into an escape room first and their escape time is recorded. The other team then goes into the same room and tries to do even better.

This introduces a whole new dimension to escape room games. Some escape rooms will even close their escape rooms to the public for the day so you and your group have the whole place to yourselves.
