Maybe you can't tell your grass from your tennis elbow, but you have to be pretty familiar with the global phenomenon that is Anna Kournikova.
Her ability to deliver a wicked forehand got her in the world's door, but it was her smooth-as-Russian-vodka mixture of perkiness and brain-melting sexiness that made her the world's most recognised athlete. Maxim got to sit down with the blonde-headed beauty and grill her about life.
How do you manage to maintain that jaw-dropping physique?
I just play tennis for, like, a thousand hours a day. I train a lot, so I stay in shape not to maintain my body but for playing tennis.
How do you feel about the various 'unofficial' websites designed to celebrate your, ahem, body of work?
Well, sometimes I get weirded out by them, some of the really strange ones. But otherwise, it's all pretty cool.
Do you mind the media focusing more on your romantic entanglements than your on-court performance.
When I go out, I love to just have fun and not think about anything. But then I wake up the next day and I read about it in the paper! Yeah, that's a lot of fun. Ninety-nine percent of the things I read about, I didn't even do them! My life is really not as exciting as they make it out to be, it's much more simple.
If you're not the ultra-exclusive VIP you're made out to be, then average blokes like us must approach you all the time, right?
It doesn't happen very often. But just yesterday a guy actually called my house! [No, you may not have the number - Ed.] It was kind of funny. He said, "Hi, I heard you're this and that... can I come and meet you?" I actually had to give him credit for being so bold.
Being an international sex symbol and world-class athlete has its perks, right?
No! Well... maybe when I'm missing a plane or something. Missing a connection - then it helps to be famous. I can go, "But I have to be on the plane! I have to play tomorrow! You have to help me!".
