Honour, fortune, country, sex with stupidly named Estonian women… there are only a few things your average Englishman would risk his life for. However, seeing as we work for Maxim, the small print of our contracts specifically states that staff are obliged to ‘put your pathetic lives on the line purely for your readers’ brief amusement’.
So this month, to tie-in with the release of Quantum Of Solace and a new BT gizmo, Maxim was challenged to match the Home Hub’s range and strength by bungee jumping from the top of the 220m Verzasca hydroelectric dam in Locarno, Switzerland. It’s where Pierce Brosnan made his famous swallow-dive in the opening scene of GoldenEye , is officially the highest bungee jump in the world and comprises an enormous vertical drop onto the jagged granite below.
Needless to say, as with most things in life that you look forward to for ages (sex, Star Wars remakes etc) it’s best to get them over with quick-sharp, so after a rapid 1-2-3 count, Maxim descends into oblivion and an insane sensual cocktail of grey concrete, rushing wind and girly giggles as we plummet, potentially fatally, down the face of the dam.
A split-second later our limbs flail uncontrollably as the bungee pings us towards the lip. Concrete, sky, trees, wind, mountains, fear, lots of swearing… it all swirled around the cavernous wall, until we came to rest upside down and 100m from safety.
Sadly, there’s no Q-inspired arrow gun to propel us down to the dam’s floor and Halle Berry isn’t waiting for us at the top with some new massage oils and a nice cup of tea. But we’re pretty sure our busty receptionist will be impressed nonetheless.
The new BT Home Hub offers the strongest connection and signal – with twice the wireless range of any broadband provider. Available to new and existing BT customers. Go to www.bt.com/newhub
