The look of these shades says serious, as opposed to recreational, sportsman. They share the same ClimaCool technology as the Elevation Pro, and the soft, gripping material integrated into the temples provide a non-slip, stable fit – good news for cyclists.

These highly innovative sunglasses are the male sporting equivalent of the front-fastening bra. They shun fiddly straps around the back in favour of a powerful magnet that holds the glasses together at the front. It works, but it makes them cumbersome to store.

If Spider-Man were real, these would be his sunglasses of choice. Their award-winning ClimaCool nosepiece, which acts as a vent to prevent fogging, their quick-fit lens change system and protective wraparound style make them ideal for hardcore athletes.

French brand Julbo is particularly good for watersports. That said, this particular line felt too delicate for all-action sports such as wakeboarding or kitesurfing. Still, the lenses feature all manner of excellent anti-dazzle and anti-reflection devices.

Although they lack some of the more cutting-edge technology that other brands trumpet, these are comfortable, lightweight sports shades at a decent price. And unlike some of the more futuristic-looking styles, they also flatter most face shapes.

These are a seamless mix of form and function. Considering the beefy look, they’re amazingly lightweight, with great protection – the lenses can supposedly withstand a 12-gauge shotgun blast. Let's hope this is one feature you never have to test.
