Should I be scared of superbugs?

I have to go into hospital for a minor knee operation, but I’ve heard so much about MRSA I’m worried about catching a superbug. Am I being paranoid?
Bryan Hepp, by email

Hospital-acquired infections are in the news so much these days they’re hard to ignore. But it’s those with weak immune systems (such as elderly people) who should be most concerned, because they’re most at risk.

Many people innocently carry these bugs on their skin without suffering from any related problems. The bugs, however, can be passed on to others who may suffer, if unwell. So it’s important to take precautions, which is why hospitals have hand hygiene gel dispensers on walls, sinks and at the ends of beds. They aren’t there for decoration and should be used by everyone to reduce the risk of passing infections on. Visitors are advised to use these hygiene gels before entering and after leaving a ward, and don’t be afraid to ask staff if they have washed their hands.
