Is it OK to use meal replacement shakes?

Find out whether they're a safe way to lose weight

You see those meal replacement shakes everywhere at this time of year. Are they a safe way to lose weight?
Rob Macey, by email

These drinks are formulated to contain a good balance of carbohydrate, protein and essential fats as well as containing all the vitamins and minerals the body needs. Some of them also contain fibre that is good for gut health and can keep you feeling fuller for longer, meaning they are more satisfying. They’re a simple and effective way to kick-start any weight-loss plan.

The only downside is the boredom factor. After a week or two of nothing but shakes it’s easy to give up and revert to your old eating habits, which will probably undo all your hard work. The problem is that the shake
diet doesn’t help you to make healthy changes to your diet that you can keep up in the long term. It’s best, as always, to eat a healthy, varied diet containing plenty of fruit and vegetables.
