Do steroids cause long-term damage?

Find out the possible side effects from taking anabolic steroids

I used to take steroids to bulk up. I took them for five years but stopped about five years ago. Will there be any long-term damage to my body?
Scott Wilson, by email

There are a number of possible long-term side effects from anabolic steroids. They increase levels of bad cholesterol and reduce good cholesterol in the blood, which makes narrowing of the arteries more likely and increases the risk of circulatory disease such as heart attacks and strokes. They may also contribute to high blood pressure, which increases the risk of circulatory, heart and kidney disease. There’s also a risk of liver damage.

It’s good to know that you’ve given up the steroids. Now you must protect your health from further harm. Keeping your cholesterol, weight and blood pressure at healthy levels is important, as is regular exercise and a healthy diet. Go for a check-up with your doctor that includes a blood pressure check, blood tests to measure cholesterol levels and kidney and liver function, and an electrocardiogram (ECG) so you know your current baseline and what may need specific attention.
