Fitness: Ask The Experts

What are the best nuts to eat?

I love to snack on nuts during the day. Which type of nuts should I go for to get the best health benefits?

Brigid McKevith from the British Nutrition Foundation replies: All nuts are good for fibre, essential fatty acids and plant protein. They are also an excellent source of biologically active components known as phytochemicals, which may have important health properties.
Almonds packed to the brim with minerals that aid the smooth running of the muscles and nerves, and relieve muscle cramps and reduce the risk of stroke.

Brazil nuts: Selenium, helps the mobility of your sperm and strengthens the immune system, while magnesium is necessary for the health of your heart.
Hazelnuts keeps skin, bones, hair, red blood cells, circulation and heart looking and working well. Vitamin E doesn't stay in the body long, so you need to take it regularly.
Almost a quarter of each peanut is protein, which is needed for the growth and repair of muscle tissues and is particularly important if you exercise regularly.
Pistachios with only 331 calories per 100 grams, pistachios are the nut of choice for anyone who doesn't want to pile on the pounds. They're high in folate and magnesium, too.
Pecans are almost 70% fat and only 9% protein, with more calories than their nutty rivals. They also compare poorly against other nuts on vitamin and mineral content.
